Joseph J. Costantino Interview

I grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y. I began writing songs for my band in the early 1970's. Writing songs and playing in a band was my way of staying away from drugs and gangs. I have a real love for Film Noir movies and great fiction novels. I have three books published. One about my songs, one about growing up in Brooklyn and my latest try at fiction with my novel "Expecting Rain"

What inspired you to write?
Growing up I was in a Rock Band that did some original songs. I was one of the songwriters.

Did the inspiration to write come to you suddenly, or had you been thinking about it some time?
I always had a love for words and writing

How did you tell your story? In other words, did you use an outline, or just write your story from start to finish?
My three books were written without an outline. The book I am working on now has an outline.

Did you receive any encouragement from family and friends, or did you work on your book alone?
I usually have help with editing after I write.

What was the most difficult part of writing your book?
The middle of my books are always the most difficult

What was the most enjoyable aspect of writing your book?
Creating characters that you could find in everyday life

Did you experience any personal transformation after the book was published?
It is always a good feeling to see your work published

What’s something that gets in the way of your creativity?
Lack of ideas. Procrastination.

What strategies do you use to deal with criticism?
It is always hard when someone finds fault in your work. It does get personal at first but then you learn.

Where did you grow up and what is your favorite/worst childhood memory?
I grew up in Brooklyn, NY. My best childhood memories were playing in the band. My worst childhood memories were losing friends to drinking or drugs.
