Harry and Larry are the world's favorite canaries. From the beginning of their memory the two brothers grow from small birds living in a little pet shop, into amazing pet birds full of fun and mischief. Harry and Larry are happy go lucky types, but when danger strikes they can get very serious. To these canaries no day is a boring one!
Our girls have really enjoyed this book. The review my youngest gave me was a spoiler alert, so we will keep it to ourselves. When we asked about this book at our local library, the librarian told us that she was on the waiting list to read it! Get your own copy today. Zoe is ten years old, and the fact that she has her first book published already has inspired our girls to develop their writing.
A Sweet Book about two canaries, Harry and Larry. The story focused on friendship and the artwork was colorful and well crafted for a such a young author-artist. A friend shared this with me and my kids and they liked it. Impressive 1st novel for an 10-11 year old? Kids are growing up so fast these days.

Misty watches Drake fly over to the island in the middle of the large pond. Drake looks out into the pond and sees his true love, Misty, and their three little baby ducks swimming on the other side of the pond. He quacks and quacks until she comes over and joins him on the island. Drake is very happy now that his family is close to him.
Drake, Misty, and their three little baby ducks live in a beautiful park with two ponds in Whitewright, Texas. Drake is very proud of his three little baby ducks. Their baby ducks are named Stone, Stormi and Wendy. Drake is the oldest duck in the pond and he is the ruler of the park. There are many ducks that live in the park. They are all different kinds and colors. Drake is black and has a red patch around both of his eyes. Some of Drake's feathers turn blue and green when the sun hits them. Drake is the father of many of the ducks in the park. Drake loves Misty with all his heart. He protects Misty and his baby ducks from danger. In fact, he protects all of the ducks in the park every day! Drake is big and strong. Adult ducks are fast fliers too. Drake is a Muscovy duck.
Most ducks are smaller than swans and geese. A baby duck is called a duckling or a chick. A female duck is called a hen and a male duck is called a drake. Ducks can be found in fresh water or seawater.
A squirrel named Rocky also lives in the park and loves to eat the pecans that fall out of the two pecan trees. Rocky has fun climbing up and down all of the trees in the park. Rocky likes to climb way up high in the trees. There are all different kinds of trees in the park. The trees provide good shade for everyone because it is so hot in Texas during the summer months. One of the trees has a huge split in the middle of it. Misty will make her nest inside that tree and lay her eggs in there every year during spring. That is where many of Drake's ducklings were hatched.
Spring is the best time to visit the park because you will see all the ducklings running around! The ducklings always stay close to their mother. They are cute and so much fun to watch. During spring all of the flowers are blooming and the park is just beautiful with rose bushes all around it.
The park has a walking trail where people come to walk when the weather is nice. The park has benches where people come to relax and read books. The park is so pretty during spring that they have weddings at the park.
There is a monument in the park that is dedicated to honor the memory of four fallen soldiers killed in the Vietnam War.
The ducks will walk across the road to the smaller pond. If cars come down the road, they always stop and let the ducks cross the road. The people all around the park love the ducks and will always watch out for them in the road. It is beyond cute when Misty and her three ducklings cross the road!
There are tons of fish that live in the pond. Sometimes you can see a turtle swimming around in the pond, or even a green snake! The turtle's name is Shelly and the green snake's name is Dracula. There is a huge bullfrog that lives in the pond and you can hear him croaking all the time. His name is Slimy. Slimy likes to hop from one lily pad to another and then dive down into the pond. He likes to reach out with his long tongue and grab a water spider.
There was a large group of beautiful wild horses that roamed free all around Mustang Island by the Atlantic Ocean. The wild horses loved to run and play along the beach and in the ocean. They would also run up and down the mountains on the island. The wild horses had been on Mustang Island for hundreds of years. Wild horses are also known as "feral horses." People came from all over the world to see the wild horses. The leader of the wild horses was a beautiful white stallion. The wild horses were mainly mustangs, but there were also a few other breeds.
The wild horses were all different colors. There were two other white horses, a couple of tan horses, a gorgeous black stallion with a white star on his head, several brown horses, some black and white horses, some brown and white horses, a tan and white horse, and a few gray horses.
There was a young girl named Makala that lived on the island with her parents. She had been going to the beach since she was a little girl, and she loved to watch the wild horses. She had been taking photographs of them on the beach and in the mountains. She thought it was so funny when the wild horses would start rolling on the beach. They were so much fun to watch. She was always so excited when there was a new foal born. The herd of wild horses was growing each year. Sometimes, she would bring carrots and hay to the beach with her for the horses. She would spread them out on the beach for them. Then she would move off so the horses would come over to the beach area to eat the carrots and hay. Then she could photograph them while they were closer to her.
Makala's room was filled with photographs she had taken over the years of the wild horses. Makala wanted to become a photographer when she was older.
One evening, her father told her that he had a big surprise for her. He took her outside, and one of the wild horses was inside their fence! He told her that he had paid someone to rope and capture the wild horse. Then he adopted the horse for her. He knew how much she enjoyed the wild horses. Makala walked out to the horse. It was not just any wild horse; it was the white horse that was the leader of the wild horses! He was so beautiful! She was very excited and could not wait to tame her horse. She named her horse Spirit.
The next day, she started working with Spirit to try and tame him. He started kicking the fence. He wanted out of the fence. He was very big and very strong. He did not like being captured. He reared up and started snorting! Suddenly, all of the wild horses came running up to her land! They had all come to see Spirit. You could tell that all of the wild horses were very upset. They were all making very loud noises. Makala started feeling bad for Spirit. She wondered if she should turn Spirit loose so he could run wild and free again with the other wild horses. She told her dad that she was feeling guilty for taking away the leader of the wild horses. He told her that they would have another leader very soon since their leader was gone now.
"Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday dear Will, happy birthday to you." Everyone is singing happy birthday to Will. It is Will's birthday party and he is 10 years old. His mother surprises him with a special gift. She gives him a Congo African Grey Parrot! He is so excited and gives his mother a huge bear hug. He names his parrot Congo. Congo is very tame and has been hand raised by a breeder in Oklahoma. His mother had the bird flown in from Oklahoma.
Congo and Will live in Africa. His mother works in Africa helping the people of Africa to get fresh clean water. Sometimes his mother will take him to work with her, and he gets to visit some of the local tribes in Africa. Africa is very different from The United States where they used to live. Will and his mother are from Oklahoma. Will always brings Congo with him when he goes to visit the tribes. The tribes have never seen a parrot that is tame before. They don't know what to think about Congo sitting on his shoulder. All the children want to hold Congo and pet him. Congo loves all the attention from the children. He also talks to the children, and they all start laughing. Congo gets very excited when he is around the children.
Will always takes pictures of the children and Congo together. One of the children gave him a necklace made out of shark's teeth. He loves his necklace. He gave the child a bunch of Congo's colorful feathers that he had been keeping. The children love feathers and make things out of them all the time.
Will has started a scrapbook of Africa. He tells his mother that he wants to go on an African safari so he can take pictures of the lions, zebras, elephants, and other wild animals in Africa. His mother promises him that she will take him on a safari soon.
Some of the children and adults from the tribe are getting ready to go down to the river. Will asks his mother if he can go with them. Since there are adults with the children, she lets him go to the river with them. All of the adults carry spears with them. When Will gets to the river, he looks across the river and sees a jaguar! A jaguar is a huge cat that is a type of panther. They are tan with black spots and are just beautiful. The jaguar is at the edge of the river and watching something in the water. Suddenly, the jaguar dives into the river and within minutes he comes up with a crocodile in his mouth! Will could not believe his eyes! He started taking pictures of the jaguar and the crocodile. The crocodile was fighting for his life, but the jaguar won. The jaguar dragged the crocodile up the riverbank with his powerful jaws. What an amazing thing to witness! He had never seen anything so exciting in his entire life.
Africa was such a wild adventure for Will. He loved living in Africa. He loved all the animals and birds. There were so many different kinds of colorful birds in Africa. He began taking pictures of all of the birds for his scrapbook of Africa.
Will's mother took him on a safari one afternoon as she had promised him. He had the time of his life. He saw so many wild animals and loved every minute of the safari. He didn't want the safari to end. He took photographs of a huge hippo in the river, an elephant with her baby elephant, six zebras and a huge lion. He got to witness the lion chasing a zebra! He saw a group of vultures gathered all around and eating something. They also saw a bunch of Cape Buffalo, African Rhino, hyena and giraffe. They saw a cheetah zip past them running super fast after an antelope. Then they disappeared into the bushes. They looked up into a tree and saw a beautiful leopard resting in the tree! They got to see a pretty red fox that was watching them closely on top of some large rocks.
While Will was visiting with some of the children of a local tribe, a woman from the tribe came running out and screaming something over and over. Then he realized she was screaming, "Mamba! Mamba!" One of the men from the tribe grabbed his spear and went after the Black Mamba. The Black Mamba is a huge poisonous snake of Africa and is one of the most dangerous snakes in Africa. Everyone in Africa fears the Black Mamba. The man killed the Black Mamba with his spear before it bit anyone. All of the tribe members began to cheer for him. Will watched them as they cleaned the snake and cooked him over an open fire. Then everyone ate the snake. They handed him a bite to taste it. He ate the piece of snake and he thought it was very good. Now he can say that he has eaten snake. He thought it tasted like chicken.
The Puff Adder is Africa's deadliest snake. The Puff Adder has killed more people than any other snake. The Puff Adder has large fangs and its venom is powerful enough to kill a grown man with just one single bite!
I am 5,000 years old, and I cannot wait for someone to find me and finally set me free. My name is Ammon, and I am a genie. I am trapped in my lamp and buried deep in the sand somewhere in the desert of Egypt.
Wait just a minute. I hear someone digging nearby. Maybe they will find me! I hope they are nice. I want a nice master this time. My last master was a very mean old man. I did not like him at all. He was the one that trapped me in my lamp and buried me in the sand! He became angry with me because I would not do something bad that he wanted. Someone is picking up my lamp now. They have found me! They are opening the lid to my lamp, and I am free at last! It is a young girl who has found me. She was very shocked when I came floating out of my lamp in a puff of red smoke. I told her that I was a genie, and she was my new master. She was very excited because she knew that genies could grant wishes. She could not believe that she found a genie lamp. She said she thought I was a very cute genie too.
I told her my name was Ammon. Ammon is an Egyptian name that means "unseen" or "hidden." She told me her name was Nile, and it is also an Egyptian name that means "from the Nile." She also told me that she decided to dig around in the sand that afternoon by her house. She said she loved to dig in the sand because she would always find old things there. One day she found an old gold coin! She told me that this was the best thing she had ever found while living in Egypt. She said she was born in Egypt, and she was ten years old. She said her mother was from The United States and was born in Texas. She was amazed when I told her that I was 5,000 years old! All genies live to be one million years old! I asked her what year it was. When she told me what year it was, I realized I had been buried in the sand for almost 100 years!
She told me that her first wish was to ride a camel. She had always wanted to ride a camel since she was a little girl. POOF! I granted her first wish, and suddenly a camel appeared out of a huge puff of white smoke! I took her riding on the camel all around the pyramids of Egypt. We had so much fun that day. I told her that I would grant her one wish every day.
Later that day, she told me to get back into my lamp so she could bring me home with her. She said she would have to hide me from her mother. I did not want to get back into my lamp so soon, but I did. She took me to her house. She was a beautiful young girl and very sweet. I was very happy to have such a nice master this time.
Nile hid me in her room that night. She was so excited that she could hardly sleep. She knew that the fun was about to begin. I slept in my lamp. I told her that I could make myself invisible if I ever heard her mother coming into her room when I was out of my lamp. She was glad to hear that. She didn't want her mother finding me. She knew her mother would never believe that I was a genie. She said we would have to be very careful.
Nile told me that she was afraid it had just been a dream. She was so glad to see me there when she woke up the next morning. That day, Nile took me with her when she left her house. I asked her what her second wish was for the day. She told me that she wanted to go exploring inside a tomb. POOF! After a huge puff of white smoke, we were inside a tomb! We went exploring all through the old tomb. We saw a bunch of gold treasures placed all around the tomb. Everything in the tomb was hundreds of years old. We had another great day. My new master was so much fun to be around. I told her that I would always protect her too.
Once upon a time, there was a very tiny princess who lived in a very large castle under the sea. She lived on one side of the castle and her brother, the very tiny noble knight, lived on the other side. Both Chance and Harmony were too afraid to go to sleep for fear of invaders.
“Let's have a sleepover,” Harmony suggested. The tiny princess and the tiny noble knight decided to invite all of their friends over to the very large castle so that they could feel safe and get some sleep. Their friends were Pinkie the Whale, Gray Boy the Dolphin, Octess the Octopus, Lizzie the Lizard, Sharkie the Shark and King Greenie the Frog.
“How will we tell them? We don’t have a phone because a whale knocked down a power line,” asked Chance, the tiny noble knight.
“We'll just have to go to each one and tell them about our sleepover,” suggested Harmony, the tiny princess. They decided to wait until the next morning to get an early start.
“What will we do until then?” asked Chance, the tiny noble knight.
“Let's bake some cookies, pies and cakes,” the tiny princess suggested.
“And then what?” her brother asked.
“That's not going to take all night. We are inviting six friends over,” explained the tiny princess. “We can prepare six of our finest rooms in the castle so that each one will have his or her own room. We'll have to make a special bed for Octess because she has eight arms and needs a lot of room to sleep.”
“And then what?” he repeated.
“Must I think of everything?” shouted Harmony, the tiny princess. Then she stomped off through the castle.
“Girls!” mumbled the tiny noble knight.
“Boys!” mumbled the tiny princess. Yet, they worked together all night getting the castle ready for their undersea sleepover.
This is the text of the first story called 'Molly the Mole'. This is a picture book and the text on its own is not having the same impact.
Do you like cats? Yes? I am glad because I am a black cat with a white top hat. My name is Oliver. I am very elegant and have the shiniest coat in the world. I brush my fur every morning and always keep my nails trimmed! Of course, my hat is really refined, too, which is another word for elegant.
Whenever you put on your new clothes, you can announce to everybody, "I am refined!" They will think you are an elegant person. Well, enough of all that talk about me, although I can never talk too much about myself. I really do think I am a cool cat. Do you think this is wrong? You are probably right, but I can't help it.
My best friend’s name is Jumpy. You guessed it! She likes to jump a lot because she is a kangaroo! She is a great girl and lets me ride in her pouch! I get in, and Jumpy jumps away and away!! That’s a lot of fun. I bet you would like to ride in her pouch, too, wouldn't you? You are probably a bit too big though. I am quite small, so it is OK. I love it, but after a while I need to rest. All that up and down makes me dizzy. It's like being on a roller coaster.
One day I was in Jumpy's pouch, happily hopping through the fields. It was a very sunny day, and I wore my white hat and funky sunglasses. The sun is beautiful, but too much of it burns your skin! My fur coat protects me though.
We were hopping across the fields, when Jumpy stopped suddenly. It was so unexpected that I fell out of her pouch, and bounced down on the ground.
Amazingly, I fell very softly, but that softness screamed loudly! I had fallen on a mole.
Moles are creatures that live in the ground and love to dig tunnels. They are much smaller than cats. Sometimes, they come out of their holes. Moles are blind because they do not need eyes below ground. That’s why she didn’t notice Jumpy coming. Jumpy only saw her at the last second and had to make an emergency stop. I was saved, but the mole appeared quite unhappy about the disturbance.
After I stopped turning around and around, because I was still dizzy from the jumping, I apologized to Molly the mole. She recovered quickly and was not really hurt. Then she even became friendly with us. "I have just made lunch," she said. "Why don't you join me? I have the tastiest worms and bugs. Would you like some?"
You see, that’s what moles eat. A kangaroo prefers grass. I find the occasional bug quite tasty, but I don't fancy slimy rainworms. Jumpy made an excuse not to accept the offer. "Thank you very much, but we are watching our diet!"
Molly was not unhappy, though, since she could now eat everything herself. "Come and visit me again but without any accidents next time! I think you are a very elegant cat and a very jumpy kangaroo. I like you guys. Of course, I am a lady myself and eat only the best bugs!"
