The moisture in the air condensed into droplets, then began to whirl. It danced for me, like the water wanted nothing more than to bring joy to me.
I stared. It was me. The water had answered my call. I had asked its help and it had answered me happily, like an old friend.
“I am the Gray One,” I whispered, my mind and body in perfect accord with the earth.
How could I have forgotten something so wonderful? Water, air and stones were my friends. I had missed their company.
Gray (Awakening Book 1) is a mind-blowing fantasy novel that takes place mainly in the real world, but there are plenty of elves and magic. The plot is original and suspenseful which keeps the reader wanting more. The characters are detailed so well that you love the heroes and despise the villains. There are lots of surprises as we learn Shayla's secrets as she does. I could not put this book down. I read it in just a couple of hours. I am eager to read the sequel and other works by this author!

Emma’s translucent figure looked different than she had earlier that day. There was no anguish on her face. Instead, it was distorted by the kind of fury which made my blood run cold. She was dressed all in white, everything about her a mix of beauty and horror.
Her mouth worked silently like it had done earlier, yet no sound came from her. That fury changed to a demented rage.
I stood still, my eyes fixed on her with terror in my heart. It occurred to me after a few seconds that Ian stood directly next to me. His arm was rested against mine, small tremors passing through it.
I couldn’t take my eyes off Emma. I didn’t even notice when Ian’s fingers entwined with mine. We stood and stared together until she disappeared as she had done earlier.
I took in a quivery breath and glanced over to find that Ian’s face was damp with sweat, his teeth clamped on the inside of his cheek in a way that distorted his face. He had seen her too? How was that possible?
I had been willing to accept my own delusion. The idea that Ian too had lost his mind, that was not possible. We had seen her. She had been there.
I squeezed his fingers, relieved when he looked down at our hands. The spell had been broken. He pulled his hand free and reached up to rub at the back of his neck. It was an odd thing to see him not as Emma’s brother but as a guy who was as scared as I was.
Our eyes met and I knew that whatever was going on, we would figure it out together. He and I could very well turn out to be friends . . . maybe.

'No! I refuse to get on any more of your merry-go-rounds. This has to be a dream … a nightmare.’
‘As you wish,’ she conceded too easily. ‘It’s all a nightmare. Your sleeping imagination has dreamed up a wonderfully elaborate charade, a whole series of charades. Soon you’ll wake up and be back— ah, but where? That really is a question.’
Through the night, and early hours of the morning, Nalia finds herself engaged in a lucid dream. That she is knitting a tale in pink honey comb pattern. This tale describes the ominous conditions of her brother and many fateless mates fleeing the Lost Winds; a village they call home. There are dangers looming ahead. The people of Lost Winds are afraid of persecution and death. Nalia dreams about her own life too; what it could have been, but is not. Her mates are on a boat called the Blue Moon. On a raging sea they brave through treacherous passages, to seek a new land for asylum. Finally, they reach the shores of Draviland, whose citizens speak Kroll. But grave danger lurks here as well. Will there be peace after all? For these hapless travelers have scoured the surface of the planet in search of it. Nalia continues to dream of an ending in which an ultimate world is painted, almost a utopia for herself and her mates.
Set on a fantasy land, the narrative takes place entirely on one night. It has been written in a stream of consciousness style. A technique pioneered and used by many authors such as Dorothy Richardson, Virginia Woolf, William Faulkner and James Joyce.
