Those of you old enough to remember the old Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup commercial where two people – one carrying an open jar of peanut butter and the other an open chocolate bar – collide and get some of what they were about to consume into the other’s food will recall the punch line:
“Hey, you got your chocolate in my peanut butter. And you got peanut butter on my chocolate.”
I bring this up because at some point we’ve allowed politics to collide with other areas of our lives. But unlike the acceptable, and quite tasty, result of mixing peanut butter and chocolate, mixing politics with anything else leaves a most unpleasant taste in one’s mouth.
ESPN’s Jemele Hill is finding this out the hard way today, suspended from her job for two weeks because she can’t separate her politics from sports. She isn’t the only person who makes their living in the sports world that is finding out there is a price to pay when you mix gasoline with open flame. Just ask Colin Kaepernick how his football career is going these days.
And they have no one else to blame but themselves. Nor is the blowback limited to sports figures. Several in the entertainment industry and other fields are starting to discover that the public in general is getting tired of being preached at no matter where they turn to escape the insanity that is politics today.
So here’s my suggestion: Drop it. Let politics stay in its arena. Players, concentrate on playing your games. Sports writers, write your stories about what happens on the field of play during game time. Movie makers and TV show producers, give us entertainment that allows us to escape reality for an hour or two. Book writers, tell us good stories
