"Akari woke up feeling happy and refreshed. She was on summer-break from her studies at Tokyo University and was with her girlfriends at Daisetsuzan National Park in the north of Japan. She stretched out her thin, smooth arms and arched her slender back with a yawn and went to the window to look out over the beautiful mountains and forests filled with jezo spruce, sakhalin fir, and other trees. The view was amazing and one she was still getting used to. Her friends and her had saved up their money for this trip and were excited to be able to go spend the week at a youth hostel in Asahidake Onsen. After breakfast, they discussed what they wanted to do that day. The adventurous friends went skiing. The lazy friends wanted to hang out in the hot-pools. Akari however wanted to simply explore the nature of the place. She was the only one who wanted to do this and with some tongue-in-cheek warnings about brown bears she left her friends to their varying definitions of fun as she sought out hers.

She packed a simple backpack with some food and brought along her camera hoping to get some good pictures. She lazily strolled through the beautiful forests contemplating how nature and man interact. She was grateful that nature was letting her be there but saddened that it had to be ‘reserved’. Somehow the only way to keep nature as ‘nature’ was to put up
